Discovering Genting Highlands: A Perfect Escape from Kuala Lumpur

As expats living in Kuala Lumpur, my husband and I love exploring the beautiful destinations Malaysia has to offer. One of our favorite weekend escapes is the vibrant, mountain-top resort of Genting Highlands. Let me take you through our exhilarating journey and why Genting Highlands should be on your must-visit list!

Getting There

Traveling to the Genting Highlands is incredibly easy. You can book a bus through RedBus or head to the bus counter at L1 in NU Sentral Mall to get your tickets. Pro tip: If you know when you’re coming back, book your return tickets as well. Otherwise, there are kiosks in Genting where you can book your return trip. Just be cautious during long weekends—tickets sell out fast, as we learned the hard way.

The bus ticket costs around RM 10 one way, and the cable car ride, one of the cheapest and most scenic in the world, also costs RM 10 one way. The journey from Kuala Lumpur to Genting Highlands takes about an hour, filled with stunning views of lush greenery that make the time fly by.

The Cable Car Experience

One of the highlights of the trip is the cable car ride. Operating from 7 am to 11 pm, the cable car offers breathtaking views of the lush green mountains and the surrounding landscape. We recommend taking the cable car during daylight to enjoy the stunning scenery and then returning when it’s dark to experience the magical transformation of the surroundings under the night sky.

Don’t miss the stop at Chin Swee Temple on your way up, which is worth a visit for its serene atmosphere and picturesque spots perfect for taking photos. The weather in Genting is cooler and very pleasant, providing a refreshing escape from the city’s heat. so don’t forget to bring a light jacket!

“In the embrace of Genting Highlands, every cool breeze and panoramic vista whispers a promise of adventure and the luxury of escape.”

Shopper’s Paradise at Genting Premium Outlets

One of our favorite activities in Genting Highlands is shopping at the Genting Premium Outlets. The outlet mall offers fantastic discounts on a variety of branded goods, making it a shopping paradise. The Nike store, in particular, often has great deals. If you’re worried about carrying your purchases around, Genting offers locker facilities where you can store your items and enjoy the rest of your day hands-free.

Exploring Genting Highlands

Once you step off the cable car, you’ll find yourself in a paradise of entertainment. If you’re traveling with family, especially kids, the Skytropolis Indoor Theme Park is a must-visit. Plan to spend at least half  day here, as there are numerous rides and attractions to keep everyone entertained. You can purchase tickets for individual rides or get a pass for multiple rides.

Another major attraction is the Genting SkyWorlds Theme Park. Though tickets are over RM 100 per person, the park offers an array of thrilling rides and experiences that are worth the price. For those who enjoy a bit of excitement, the SkyWorlds Casino provides an opportunity to try your luck.

Dining and Entertainment

Genting Highlands boasts a wide range of restaurants and eateries, offering everything from local Malaysian cuisine to international dishes. After a day of exploring and shopping, you can relax and enjoy a meal at one of the many restaurants. The area around SkyWorlds is especially lively, with numerous dining options and shops.

Practical Tips

  • Book in Advance: Especially during peak times like long weekends, book your bus and return tickets in advance to avoid any inconvenience.
  • Weather: Bring a light jacket as the weather in Genting Highlands can be cooler compared to Kuala Lumpur.
  • Lockers: Utilize locker facilities at Genting Premium Outlets to store your shopping bags.

Genting Highlands is an ideal destination for a quick getaway from Kuala Lumpur. Whether you’re looking for adventure, shopping, dining, or simply a break from city life, Genting has something to offer everyone. Our numerous visits have always been filled with fun and memorable experiences, and we highly recommend it to anyone looking to explore Malaysia beyond its urban centers.
