My husband and I, both non-Malaysians living in Kuala Lumpur, decided to break away from the city’s hustle and bustle for a spontaneous adventure. With no prior train or bus bookings, we sought a destination that was easy to reach and promised a unique experience. Our search led us to the charming fishing island of Pulau Ketam.
A Hidden Fishing Village Escape Just a Ferry Ride from KL
Getting There
Our journey began at the KL Sentral station, where we boarded the KTM Komuter train towards Port Klang. The train ride, lasting around 1.5 to 2 hours, was comfortable and affordable, costing us approximately RM 5-6 each. The scenic route was a pleasant bonus, offering glimpses of Malaysia’s diverse landscapes.

From Port Klang to Pulau Ketam
Upon arriving at Port Klang, the end of the train line, we found several vendors selling boat tickets to Pulau Ketam. The boat ride cost around RM 7-10 per person. After purchasing our tickets, we embarked on a short and scenic boat journey to the island.
Exploring the Fishing Island
Pulau Ketam, also known as the “Crab Island,” is a fascinating fishing village where the houses are built on stilts above the water. As soon as we arrived, we were greeted by a bustling scene of fishing boats and the aroma of fresh seafood.
To explore the island, we rented a scooter for RM 10 per hour. One hour was more than sufficient to tour the small village, but every moment was packed with intriguing sights and sounds. The narrow streets were lined with quaint houses, local shops, and small restaurants offering delectable seafood and refreshing drinks, including beer.
“”Where the rhythm of the tides sets the pace of life—Pulau Ketam, a fishing island where adventure meets tranquility.”
A Unique Experience
Pulau Ketam offers a glimpse into a unique way of life, vastly different from the urban environment of Kuala Lumpur. The community here lives in harmony with the sea, relying on fishing as their primary livelihood. The simplicity and charm of this village provided a refreshing contrast to our usual city life.
For those who enjoy seafood, Pulau Ketam is a culinary delight. The local restaurants serve fresh catches of the day, prepared in a variety of delicious styles. We indulged in a seafood feast, savoring every bite of the local delicacies.
A Perfect Half-Day Trip
Our spontaneous trip to Pulau Ketam turned out to be a perfect half-day adventure. It was a wonderful opportunity to experience a different way of life, enjoy fresh seafood, and take a break from the city’s fast pace. If you’re in Kuala Lumpur and looking for a unique and easily accessible getaway, Pulau Ketam is an ideal destination.
So, if you ever find yourself in Kuala Lumpur with a free weekend and a desire for a quick escape, hop on the KTM Komuter to Port Klang and set sail for Pulau Ketam. You won’t be disappointed!
